The Federal Office of Public Health has been calculating the “average premium” since 2018. This shows how much a person pays on average for basic insurance. In 2021, adults in Switzerland paid CHF 375, young adults (aged 19-25) CHF 264 and children CHF 100. The average monthly premium amounted to around CHF 316. It will be around 1 franc (0.2%) lower in 2022, as some insurance companies have reduced their reserves. You can find more details for your canton here (p. 794). However, over the last 10 years, the average premium has risen by 2.4% per year and not all insurers are reducing their premiums. By 2023, the premium will rise by an average of 6.6%. By changing your basic insurance, you will get a lower premium.

Switching basic insurance – answers to the most important questions: everything you need to know

Are there differences in benefits under basic insurance?

No. The scope of benefits for basic insurance is the same for all providers.

Who can change their basic insurance?

Everyone. You can switch even if you are currently undergoing treatment or are already older. Our tip: your termination will only take effect if you are “debt-free” with your previous health insurer on 31.12. are “debt-free”. You must pay obligations such as outstanding premium payments, co-payments, interest on arrears or debt collection costs before the end of the year.

How often can I change my basic insurance?

You can switch every year on January 1. It doesn’t matter whether your insurance becomes more expensive on this date. It also doesn’t matter whether you choose or have a higher deductible or an HMO, GP or telemedicine model. You can switch every year.

What are HMOs, family doctor models or telemedicine?

HMO (stands for Health Maintenance Organization or group practice), family doctor model and telemedicine are insurance models where you are restricted in your choice of doctor. In return, you pay a lower premium.
With the HMO model, you first go to a group practice that your insurer has recognized. With the family doctor model, you first go to your named family doctor. Both will refer you to a specialist if necessary. With telemedicine, you first call a medical hotline before visiting a doctor or hospital, which decides on the next treatment step (doctor, specialist). In all models, you can go directly to an ophthalmologist or gynecologist.

What deadlines do I need to keep in mind when changing my basic insurance?

November 30 is D-Day, because the notice period for basic insurance is one month to the end of the year. Incidentally, it is not the postmark that counts, but when your notice of termination is received by the insurer. Our tip: cancel in writing by November 15 by registered mail to December 31 or by A Mail. This will ensure that your notice of termination is received by your current health insurer on the last working day in November at the latest.

What happens if I make a mistake when changing?

Stay cool. Even if something goes wrong when you switch: you will remain insured in any case. This is because basic insurance is compulsory. This doesn’t just mean that you have to take out insurance. It also means that every health insurer that operates in your region of residence must accept you without restriction. For those of you who are interested, this is how it works: the new health insurance company tells your ex that you are now linked to them without interruption. Only then does the relationship with your old insurer end. That’s why you have no risk when you switch.

What do I have to write when I give notice?

No explanation, no novels. Just say goodbye in writing. Simply fill in the sample template online, print it out and send it by post. Just enter your name, address and year of birth – that’s it! You don’t have to answer any questions about your health when you switch.

Can I have basic and supplementary insurance with different providers?

Yes. If you cancel your basic insurance, the health insurer is therefore not allowed to cancel your supplementary insurance. However, insurance with different insurers involves a little more work for the reimbursement of invoices. You may have to send invoices to both insurers. Or you may have to wait for the basic insurance to be settled before you can submit it to the supplementary insurance so that it pays its contribution.
