in the extra-mandatory scheme.\nWe think it&#8217;s time to take a closer look at the pension fund.\nBecause that&#8217;s what matters.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n<!--more-->\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While the\n1st pillar &#8211; AHV is intended to provide us with social security, the\n2nd pillar &#8211; the BVG occupational pension scheme &#8211; serves to build up assets for old age.\nThe AHV is financed on a pay-as-you-go basis and capped.\nIn the best case scenario, you will receive a maximum pension of CHF 2,450 per month from the AHV for individuals (as at 2024) and one and a half times this amount for married couples &#8211; CHF 3,675 (= CHF 2,450 * 1.5).\nThe occupational benefit scheme is capital-financed.\nIt pays out what you and your employer have paid in, plus interest.        <\/span>So &#8220;more is more&#8221; applies here.  <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The pension fund usually makes up the lion&#8217;s share of your pension income, so let&#8217;s take a closer look.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Switzerland there are around <\/span><b>1,700 pension funds, <\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with which over four million people are insured for their retirement.\nYour employer chooses the pension fund. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-483e3af\" id=\"so-rechnen-pensionskassen-strong-beitragsprimat-obligatorium-koordinationsabzug-und-umwandlungssatz-strong\" data-block-id=\"483e3af\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">How pension funds calculate: <strong>Defined contribution, mandatory, coordination deduction and conversion rate<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-1562d87\" data-block-id=\"1562d87\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Most pension funds operate according <strong>to<\/strong> the <strong>defined contribution<\/strong> model.\nYou and your employer make contributions to the pension fund.\nYour assets accumulate there with interest.\nThe more you pay in, the more you will have in old age.\nYour pension fund assets belong to you.    <\/p><\/div>\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smolio.ch\/de\/finanzlexikon\/obligatorium\"><strong>compulsory scheme<\/strong><\/a> compulsory contributions are paid on income from the BVG entry threshold up to the BVG upper limit.\nThe thresholds depend on the maximum AHV pension and change every two years.\nYou can find the valid values for 2024 in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smolio.ch\/wissen\/vorsorgekennzahlen-2024-maximale-ahv-rente-rentenhoehe\/\">specialist article<\/a>.\nCompulsory contributions apply to all pension funds &#8211; it is compulsory.\nIn addition, voluntary contributions can be paid into many pension funds on income above the BVG upper limit.\nThese are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smolio.ch\/wissen\/ueberobligatorium\/\">extra-mandatory<\/a> benefits.       <\/p>\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">There is also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smolio.ch\/en\/wissen\/coordination-deduction\/\"><strong>coordination deduction<\/strong><\/a>.\nThis is an amount of your annual income that is already insured in the AHV and is therefore not insured again in the pension fund.\nIt is deducted from your annual income to determine your insured salary.\nIf you earn little (your income is between the BVG entry threshold and the coordination deduction), the pension fund insures the so-called <strong>minimum insured salary<\/strong> &#8211; How does this loss of income come&hellip;<\/p>\n<\/div><a class=\"stk-block-posts__readmore\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smolio.ch\/en\/wissen\/how-much-money-does-a-pensioner-need-in-switzerland-having-enough-to-make-ends-meet-in-retirement\/\">Continue Reading<\/a><\/article><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"stk-inner-blocks\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-ec3d0d4\" id=\"demografie-setzt-pensionskassen-unter-druck\" data-block-id=\"ec3d0d4\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Demography puts pension funds under pressure<\/h2><\/div>\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although pension funds are still doing relatively well on the whole, they are under pressure due to the low interest rate environment and the increasing life expectancy of their policyholders and pensioners.\nThe returns that pension funds generate and how long they have to pay pensions from assets determine how much they can grant their insured persons in benefits and pay out as a pension.\nIn other words, the conversion rate with which your assets are converted into a pension.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is it then worthwhile to rely on benefits that go beyond the BVG mandatory scheme?\nIf, for example, pension funds do not make a coordination deduction from the insured salary, this means that pension fund contributions are paid on your income from the very first franc.\nOr even if income above the BVG upper limit is insured, this means <strong>higher contributions &#8211; for you as an employee and also for your employer.<\/strong>  <\/span>  You have to make more savings contributions from your income, but you also get more credited to your pension fund account.<\/p>\n\n<p data-block-type=\"core\">The pension funds are <strong>free to set<\/strong> the <strong>conversion rate<\/strong> for these extra-mandatory benefits <strong>.<\/strong> Typically, a so-called enveloping conversion rate is then applied to the total <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smolio.ch\/wissen\/altersguthaben\/\">retirement assets <\/a>, which is then lower than the minimum BVG conversion rate.\nHigher contributions lead to higher retirement assets and therefore to a higher pension &#8211;
